A Different Point of View

The infancy story of Christ
tells us we can have hope and joy,
can overcome our immense loneliness
and can find
unity, integration, solidarity
and reconciliation of all,
with all.

At its root, there is only one reason
for the existence of poverty:
selfishness, which is a manifestation of
a lack of authentic love.

Sadly, we tend to think of the homeless
as social nuisances.
Jesus had a different point of view
and suggested that the poor
are pathways to God.

By serving the poor
we are not only practicing Christian charity,
we are also reforming ourselves.

We don’t have to solve
all the problems for the poor;
just being with them
goes a long way toward
lightening their burden.

The witness of love
lived in voluntary poverty
has the peaceful power
to change hearts.

Evidently this is not my road, but companioning those who walk it is…. the poverty of solidarity.
