Pregnant with “The Christ”

Meister Eckhart (1260-1328) said:

“We are all meant to be mothers of God. What good is it to me if this eternal birth of the divine Son takes place unceasingly but does not take place within myself? And, what good is it to me if Mary is full of grace if I am not also full of grace? What good is it to me for the Creator to give birth to (the Son of God) if I also do not give birth to (Christ) in my time and my culture?”

Sr. Mary Southard, CSJ, brings Eckhart’s observation into the present moment:

“Each of us is pregnant with ‘The Christ,’ with God’s dream for creation. Each of us is seeded with gifts and capacities to heal our world in this — the fullness of time — our time. As Meister Eckhart continues: ‘This, then, is the fullness of time . . . when the Son of God (The Christ) is begotten in us.’ We carry this sacred Promise within us. Each of us is a sacred promise pregnant with The Christ Becoming.”
