Thoughts Scribbled While in Haiti from 8/25 to 9/1

Fluency in biblical exegesis is not holiness.

The size of a church is not an indication of the truth it contains.

Faith requires a passion for the truth.

To live in the reality of God is to live in trust, transparency and compassion. To live in the reality of God is to be embraced by God’s tenderness.

To know God is not to know fear.

To be a follower of Christ is to celebrate the tenderness of God.

The same tender mercy that sustains me sustains my enemy.

To live in Haiti within the confined context of a single family crammed into a small, impoverished space is to confront my own selfishness. Instead of seeing the needs of others, I see only what I am lacking…such as a clean, private bathroom. It is in places of destitution I see my own true destitution.

We often find it very difficult to offer forgiveness. Not so God; for God, forgiveness is effortless. In fact, God takes joy in forgiveness because it generates new life.
