An Unquenchable Fire

Within St. Francis of Assisi,
whose feast day we celebrate today,
there burned
a voracious fire
for God.
He sought God, and God alone.
At the core of his being,
he longed for the embrace of God.
This gnawing hunger,
this relentless desire
energized every moment of his life,
and gave meaning to his life,
fashioning an
inner strength and discipline
to forge ahead on his quest for God
no matter the obstacles.

Each of us has a fire
within us,
but unlike St. Francis
most of us
do not know how to
direct and control
that fire.

We are either attached to
or distracted by
so many thoughts and things
that draw us away from
the presence of God.
Our lives are so busy and fragmented
that we have no time
for prayer and contemplation.
Without prayer,
the fire for God
that is within us
slowly burns out
and the process of
internal transformation
dies from the cold.
