No Pain, No Gain

No Pain, No Gain

When it comes to our careers or business endeavors or succeeding in art or athletics we all know the importance of discipline. No pain, no gain. Yet when it comes to our inner life, or life of the spirit, it seems we easily succumb to the temptation of slipping into indiscipline. But our lack of spiritual discipline, our avoiding any form of asceticism, leaves us vulnerable to be influenced by the empty allurements and false realities of our culture. To arrive at a point of true selflessness, a point of wanting nothing for yourself, living fully for God and others, requires the same kind of focused discipline that we exercise in our external endeavors. When our wills are dulled by impure and selfish desires, our spirits in turn become deaf to the silent voice of God that is always gently whispering the truth, gently calling us into the abandonment of our ego so we can enter fully into essence of the divine.
