A Shimmering Ocean of Love

A Shimmering Ocean of Love

A small empty begging bowl
holds the great void of life.
Flowing along
with birth and death,
so many people
hauling water and
carrying firewood.
So many people
walking so far
for the basics of life,
being so far
from the elixir of hope.

If the human species
could reach a place
where there was
neither lack nor excess,
we would be entering
a place of inexpressible light,
we would entering
a place of lasting peace,
we would be entering
a place of immeasurable grace,
we would be entering
the Kingdom of God.

But we seem unable
to discard greed and anger,
unable to live without grasping,
unwilling to embrace the other.
And so we are unable to sail on
the shimmering ocean of love
that is God.

From the SDF film The Fragrant Spirit of Life, set in Uganda
