The cross is a symbol of tension, a place where the vertical (heaven) and the horizontal (earth) intersect. The cross is also a sign of sacrifice, a place where Christ listened to God, trusted God, was obedient to God, and became one with God in an act of total abandonment. For us the tension between the vertical and the horizontal, between heaven and earth, comes with our failure to radically trust God. Unlike Jesus, we hold back, hold on to the things of the world while God is continually inviting us to conform our lives to Christ’s self-emptying love.
We strive for heaven while clinging to earth, and so are caught between heaven and earth. Jesus is the bridge between earth and heaven…and the bridge is the cross.
